How did I quit smoking? Written on November 18, 2006, by Angel Kafazov.

The easy way to quit smoking

This has probably been one of the best things I’ve done for myself and since I know there are many people who also want to quit smoking I would be glad to share my experience on the subject. But first a bit of a history.

I was a terrible smoker. Usually, I smoked a 20-pack every day, sometimes even more. Even tough I was exposed to a lot of pressure from friends and family to quit smoking I never could. I remember doing the craziest things just to light a cigarette like once I took apart an electric heater because I didn’t have a lighter. It happened that I managed almost a whole day without smoking but this was only in situations where I knew I didn’t even have a chance for it, but once left alone it was smoking again. I tried probably hundreds of times to quit cigarettes on my own, but I never lasted more than several hours, no matter how eager I was to quit. I knew that I have will, I was going pretty well in other aspects of my life, but I never managed to quit smoking. Until one happy day …

One morning going to the store to get food I noticed a book about smoking, it was the famous bestseller from Allen Carr “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking”. I remembered the book, since my father had given it to me two years ago, but at that point I was so much pissed of smoking that I decided to give it a try one more time. Actually, this was the first book to read in German and even tough I had some difficulties I got the main idea. I remember that at the end of the book I was very disappointed when I read the “magic tric” to quit smoking. The tric was: just make your mind that you won’t smoke and you won’t. Well, it is so simple. The real idea of the author is to convince you that smoking has no benefits and no advantages whatsoever. When we confort our misbeliefs and finally realize how easy it is and how much we have to win, it is really easy. Just decide to quit and you will. So I decided to quit the day I have finished the last page of the book. I have tried hundreds of times before and never succeeded, but this time I had no false beliefs and I knew that I can do it. Allen Carr did it, and he was the worst smoker ever, so why couldn’t I as well. I realized that I am no different from all other smokers, really bad case – yes, but no exception.

There are two main reasons why people smoke – physical addiction and brainwash. Physical addiction is pretty straightforward to cope with, brainwash, however is the thing that made me think I need cigarettes, that I like them and so on and this is this book is all about. I heartly recommend it to all smokers, as this book has changed my life more than any other book I’ve read. If you really want to quit, you should read it, you have nothing to lose, only to win.

Edit: I found this video on YouTube about Allen Carr where he tells the story about quiting smoking. Watch it!
